The L Word
The soundtrack to the new Showtime original series about a group of both gay and straight women living, working, and loving in LA. Artists include Marianne Faithfull, Lucinda Williams, Connie Francis, Ella Fitzgerald, Rufus Wainwright, Joan Armatrading, and more.

The L Word
Showtime's lesbian-themed drama is a more intimate and emotionally complex sexual bookend to the network's successful Queer As Folk franchise. That sensibility is gratifyingly mirrored in the eclectic pop, rock, and folk songs that serve as its musical soul, often fleshing out the show's ensemble characters and plot lines in the bargain. Fourteen highlights from the show's first season are collected here, anchored by the Murmurs' delicate, k. d. lang-produced 90's pop-smart "Genius." (A side note: the Murmurs' Leisha Hailey now plays journalist Alice in the series.) There's often a mood-first, fashion-be-damned sensibility at work, as witnessed by such disparate fare as Ella Fitzgerald's jazz-languor take on Cole Porter's "Lets Do It (Let's Fall in Love)" and the delightful country-kitsch of Connie Francis' "Everybody's Somebody's Fool." There are contributions from veterans (Joan Armatrading's "Weakness In Me") and newcomers (the savory Latina fire of Fantcha's "Sol Ja Camba") alike, as well as such welcome male contributions as Joseph Arthur's "In the Sun" and Rufus Wainwright's nakedly emotional, now iconic cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." --Jerry McCulley
